TREATMENT QUESTIONS

01
What conditions do you treat?

We specialize in treatment for thyroid and certain endocrine disorders using progressive methodologies to give patients their lives back. We believe that a patient’s symptoms, not just lab results, should guide treatment.

‍Conditions We DO Treat: Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto’s Disease, Graves Disease, fatigue, symptoms associated to menopause, menstrual disorders, hormonal imbalances, hormone replacement, treatment after thyroidectomy.

‍Conditions We DO NOT Treat: primary care concerns, Lupus, MS, molds or heavy metal toxicity, parathyroid, psychiatric disorders (including depression and anxiety that is unrelated to thyroid condition), SIBO or gut-only conditions, or pain management.

02
Do you use naturally desiccated thyroid like Armour, WP Thyroid, Nature-Throid?

Though we don’t conform to one-size-fits-all thyroid management, we do find that these types of medications, or other medications that include T3 in them, often work best for patients. We do a full analysis of how each person’s thyroid is functioning and base treatment on that, but in short, we are a fan of natural desiccated thyroid.

Check out Why Synthroid Doesn’t Work on our You Tube channel.

03
What labs do you typically order?

We do an in-depth thyroid panel to fully understand your thyroid function, allowing us to fix and perfect even the most minor or complex of issues.  Our normal thyroid panel includes:  TSH, Free T4, Free T3, Reverse T3, Thyroid-peroxidase Antibodies, & Thyroglobulin Antibodies.

04
Do you treat Hashimoto’s and Graves?

100% yes!  This is the area where functional medicine truly thrives. All of our clinicians are trained to search for and attempt to address the “root cause” of these conditions, attempting lower antibodies and ideally create a state of remission.

As far as Grave’s disease goes, McCall McPherson has a unique approach to manage Grave’s disease which allows patients to live a high quality of life without having to experience the symptoms of hyper or hypo – thyroid like symptoms.

05
Do you treat pregnant patients?

Yes! We provide comprehensive thyroid monitoring throughout your pregnancy, including regular lab testing, medication adjustments, and ongoing clinical support through milestone trimester markers. Our protocol is designed to ensure optimal thyroid and progesterone levels for both you and your baby. While we manage your thyroid care, you should maintain regular appointments with your OB/GYN for pregnancy-specific care. Our protocol complements your prenatal care by focusing specifically on your thyroid health.

06
I haven't gotten better before, why can you help me when others couldn't?

We are nationally known for our unique approach to treating thyroid conditions. Our novel methods have been developed and constantly refined by analyzing hundreds of thousands of pieces of lab data. The result is the most advanced, predictable, and precise treatment algorithms we know of, resulting in a success rate we believe is unmatched in medicine. Although the vast majority of our new patients have seen multiple clinicians before MTC without success, nearly all of our patients begin to feel improvement after their first appointment.

07
Do you use Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN)?

Yes, we use Naltrexone to treat the appropriate patients.

08
Do you treat adrenal fatigue?

All day, every day!  We believe if someone has prolonged thyroid dysfunction that hasn’t been properly treated, they end up with some level of adrenal fatigue.  This has to be addressed to give people their life back.

09
Do you treat hormones and use hormone replacement therapy?

All day, every day!  We believe if someone has prolonged thyroid dysfunction that hasn’t been properly treated, they end up with some level of adrenal fatigue.  This has to be addressed to give people their life back.

10
Do you order food inflammatory testing?

Yes, we order food allergy testing whenever necessary or requested, especially for Hashimoto + Graves patients. Our food allergy testing is done through a third-party lab, Alletess Laboratory, and they test your sensitivity to almost 200 foods. We have test kits in our office, or one can be shipped to your address. After you get your blood drawn and return the test kit to the lab, we receive the results in about 2 weeks. We recommend you see our health coach, Hayley Adams, for a consultation to review the results.

11
Do you offer Dutch testing?

While we don’t offer DUTCH testing (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones), we utilize other highly effective methods to assess and support hormone health. Our approach is tailored to provide comprehensive insights and personalized care. If you’d like to explore the options available, we’re happy to guide you!

12
Will I have to go gluten-free or change my entire lifestyle?

One of our core values at MTC is that we truly believe it is our job to make you feel better and to improve your energy, vitality, and capacity. Once we do that, if you choose to take that increased energy and use it to create more by shifting some of your lifestyle, amazing. But our work together and the improvement you deserve is largely expected to be delivered without you changing your entire lifestyle.

Additionally, another one of our core values is to be realistic with our expectations. We do not expect (or need) you to revolve your entire life around our thyroid treatment plan for it to work. Period.

13
I’m worried this will take too long or be too difficult to do?

We won't mislead you, or set false expectations.  Having realistic expectations and creating as much improvement in your symptoms with as little of your effort as possible is our shared goal. We know you’re tired. We know you’re barely scraping by. In fact all of our clinicians have been there themselves. We want to make your recovery as easy and fast as possible for you.

OFFICE POLICIES

01
Do you see patients by phone/tele-medicine? Where are you located?

Our headquarters is in the Austin, TX metro area, and we are expanding access nationwide, adding new states every month! Currently, we can see patients who live in Texas (in person and virtual), and via Telemedicine for Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming.

02
How do I pay for a phone / virtual appointment if I’m not in the office?

When you set up your first appointment with us we will ask for payment by credit card to secure your appointment. Payment is required at time of visit. The same card may be used for subsequent appointments, and is securely kept  by our payment systems (Stripe, Square).

03
Do you take HSA or FSA accounts as payment?

We accept FSA and HSA cards as forms of payment, but we do not accept CareCredit.

04
Your fees seem higher than my primary care provider?

MTC is an advanced, specialty clinic, that does not take shortcuts or treat patients like a number in a system. We've invested heavily in assembling the best care team available, and are committed to doing whatever it takes to get your life back. We are confident your investment in yourself will pay you ongoing dividends in productivity, happiness and quality of life.

05
How often do I need to see my care team?

Our clinicians work closely with you for the first year or so of treatment to hone in and optimize your thyroid and hormonal health. Each persons appointment schedule is unique to them. Our goal is to get you to a state of stable, perfect thyroid function as quickly as we can. After this occurs appointments are needed on a less frequent basis. Ultimately the goal is to get you to a point where we see you only once to twice a year.

06
Do you take insurance?

We are a cash-based practice and cannot accept insurance, because of the limitations of care insurance companies place on clinicians to get reimbursed. We spend significantly more time with each patient to understand the state of their health - gathering information, analyzing symptoms, providing education, and giving you the time and attention you  deserve and need to get the results your body needs. It is impossible to follow the restrictive, reductive model of practice insurance companies mandate, which generally allots only 15 minutes per patient. We can, however, provide a Superbill upon request, for you to submit to your insurance for possible out-of-network coverage.

07
Can I use insurance for labs?

This will depend on your policy. Every policy is different. We do our absolute best to order labs that are hopefully covered by your insurance in order to limit your out-of-pocket expenses whenever possible.  If you have HMO insurance, we try to work directly with your primary care doctor to get your labs covered or we can refer you to a specific lab that offers discount cash prices.

08
How long does it take to get in?

Our intake process is optimized to get you in as quickly as possible. Most people can see our health coach for their intake appointment within a week or so. Then the first appointment with your clinician is set for a couple of weeks later, the moment your lab results return. This way we can start your journey to getting your life back as quickly as possible.

09
Are you accepting new patients?

Yes! If you live in (or can travel to) Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming, we can support you!

10
What can I expect during my first visit?

‍Being heard, felt and understood!

Because we want to get to know you, your symptoms, and contributing factors, your care will begin with two appointments.

Your first visit will be with with your thyroid health coach, who will spend time getting to know you - listening, gathering all pertinent data, your health history, and symptoms. This call will last 30-minutes. Together, you will review your medical history, prescription, and symptoms, along with your goals (the most important part, right?).

Before that appointment is over, we will order all the labs needed to get you started on your personalized program,  AND book your first telemedicine visit with one of our clinicians.

The second intake appointment will be with your dedicated clinician, typically 2 weeks after you have your labs drawn. Your coach and clinician will share your history, and you'll be surprised at how well your providers understand your history, goals, your unique struggles, and pertinent lab data, so that you can start treatment during this first appointment with your clinician.

This unique process reduces the time it takes to start feeling better! Your practitioner will have all she needs to create your individualized treatment. Shortly after your appointment, your treatment plan and instructions, with all of the information that was discussed during your appointment, including prescriptions and future lab orders will be accessible inside your patient portal.

11
Does my patient status ever expire?

Yes, if you go more than 19 months without an appointment, your patient status will expire.
‍
To maintain active patient status, you must have at least one appointment within a 19-month period. As long as you do, we can continue prescribing medications (per provider guidance), ordering labs, and managing your care.
‍
If more than 19 months pass without an appointment, we are required to close your patient file. To resume care, you would need to restart the process as a new patient, beginning with a Health Coach initial consultation. This is necessary because a long gap in care means your health history, lab markers, and treatment needs may have changed significantly, requiring a full reassessment to create the most effective treatment plan for you.
‍
To avoid disruptions in care, we recommend following your provider’s appointment schedule and booking in advance when needed.
