Why Your Gut Health Could Be Sabotaging Your Thyroid Medication
Hey everyone!
If you're on thyroid medication and still not feeling better, your gut might be the culprit. At Modern Thyroid Clinic, we often talk about the gut-thyroid connection, but a new study recently caught my attention, offering some fresh insights into this relationship.
The Gut-Thyroid Connection
This study found something particularly interesting: increases in zonulin, which is a marker for leaky gut, can actually slow down the activation of your thyroid hormones. So, if you're taking medications like Levothyroxine, Synthroid, or Tirosint and not feeling well, it could be because your gut isn’t properly activating these hormones.
Why This Matters
When your gut is compromised, it doesn’t just lead to digestive issues—it can also hinder your body’s ability to convert inactive thyroid hormones into their active form. This means that even if you're taking your thyroid meds as prescribed, you might not be getting the full benefit if your gut health is off.
The Role of Probiotics
Another fascinating aspect of the study was the impact of probiotics, specifically Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. These probiotics, which I frequently recommend (they're in the Ritual supplements I often share with you), were shown to improve thyroid function.
At Modern Thyroid Clinic, we usually focus on gut issues as a root cause of Hashimoto's, which in turn leads to poor thyroid function. But this study highlighted how gut health directly impacts thyroid function, even beyond autoimmune concerns.
What You Can Do
If you're struggling with your thyroid medication, it might be time to look at your gut health. Improving gut integrity and adding the right probiotics could be the key to finally feeling better.
