Heart health and your thyroid
Hey there, lovelies! Let's dive into something really important. Did you know that February is American Heart Health Month? Yep, it's a big deal. Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women globally, surpassing even all forms of cancer combined. Scary stuff, right?
Here's where it gets interesting though. There's a strong connection between thyroid conditions and heart disease. In the early stages of hypothyroidism or when your thyroid isn't properly managed, you can start to see elevations in your blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Trust me, I've been there. At 27, my thyroid was the real issue, but my doctor kept insisting everything was fine and that I needed to go on cholesterol medication. Sound familiar?
But here's the thing: so often, if you can get to the root cause and fix your thyroid issues, your cholesterol levels improve too. I see it all the time at the Modern Thyroid Clinic. And guess what? The same factors that drive increases in cholesterol and blood sugar levels are also responsible for weight gain and retention in hypothyroidism. Crazy, right?
So this February, let's take care of our hearts by taking care of our thyroids. If you've noticed your cholesterol creeping up or your blood sugar levels acting wonky, it might be time to dig a little deeper into your thyroid health. After all, a healthy heart starts with a healthy thyroid.
