Combining Cytomel with Desiccated Thyroid: A Game-Changer for Your Thyroid Health
Good morning, everyone!
I want to share a little insight about a common issue we see with thyroid patients and how we tackle it at Modern Thyroid Clinic. Sometimes, patients taking desiccated thyroid medications like Armour or NP Thyroid have an imbalance between their T4 (inactive hormone) and T3 (active hormone). This can be especially problematic when the body doesn't convert T4 to T3 efficiently, leading to too much reverse T3, an inhibitory hormone.
Why This Happens
Desiccated thyroid medications contain both active and inactive hormones, but not everyone can handle the ratio they provide. For instance, during stressful times, the body might struggle to convert T4 into enough T3. I personally experience this issue, and I know how frustrating it can be.
Our Solution: Adding Cytomel
To address this, we often add Cytomel (a synthetic T3) to the treatment plan. By doing this, we adjust the ratio of active to inactive hormone, ensuring patients get the right amount of T3. This tweak can make a significant difference in how you feel and function daily.
How It Works
Here's a simplified breakdown:
- Desiccated Thyroid Medications: These provide a mix of T4 and T3, but the ratio might not be perfect for everyone.
- Cytomel Addition: By adding Cytomel, we increase the T3 levels directly, bypassing the conversion issue and reducing the excess of reverse T3.
Who Benefits?
I’d estimate that about 25-30% of patients on desiccated thyroid medications might need this adjustment. It's a rough estimate, but it highlights how common this issue can be.
Why This Matters
Getting the right balance of T3 and T4 is crucial for managing symptoms and overall well-being. If you're on desiccated thyroid medication and still not feeling your best, this might be the solution you need.
